ETM 3305 Construction Material : Concrete

Aggregates are a component of composite materials such as concrete and asphalt concrete

what is aggregates and where its come from ( source )?
- material that resists comprehensive stress
 source of aggregates :
- Mining of mineral aggregate deposits, including sand, gravel, and stone
- use of waste slag from the manufacture of iron and stel
- recycling of concrete
- geosynesthetic - admixer

 what is composite?
- material made from two or more constituent materials with significantly different physical or chemical properties
- when combined, produce a material with characteristics different from the individual components

what is concrete?
- its a composite consist of cement, aggregate, and water.

what is asphalt concrete?

why aggregates is choose and not soil?
- serves as reinforcement to add strength to the overall composite material
- relatively high hydraulic conductivity value as compared to most soils
- low-cost extender that binds with more expensive cement or asphalt to form concrete

what is setting and hardening?

what is admixture and its function?

Do not confused the meaning of strength and durability.
what is concrete strength and the factor affect the concrete strength?

a) water-cement ratio (w/c)
- less water used the higher the strength
- w/c should be between 0.4 and 0.5—lower for lower permeability and higher strength.
- likely to reduce shrinkage
